This is an essay written by my bro many years ago.. Dont mind me posting ur compo ar kor..

What is Courage?

What is courage? An absolute definition is impossible, for courage, is an expression of what our innermost soul is, and is a measure of the strength of our hearts. In this time and age, whereby man’s knowledge of himself is the greatest and his values most twisted, courage, as depicted by those three golden lions on the English crest, is adorned by a cloak of blemish, and shines forth no more.

Richard “The Lionheart”, the very embodiment of courage in his day, was bequeathed this name for his valour and power in battle, and truly worthy of the name. Yet, now and even then, man’s perceptions of courage are not without fault. When a fire-fighter rescues a woman from a burning building, or a soldier returns to the front line to save a fallen comrade, or perhaps when a policeman risks life and limb just to give citizens a sense of security, we see these acts and call them courageous. That I do not deny, but courage extends far beyond that. For courage is not the absence of fear, but the confrontation of it.
Ironically, fear it the very basis of courage. When we see people such as those mentioned above go into action, we look upon them with awe, but in my opinion, a child who is afraid of falling but takes that first step is similarly worthy of praise. Because those people are trained, they have gone through situations fashioned so that it makes them insensitive to their position. A fireman fights fire daily, it is nothing more than a job for him, and due to those repeated actions, there would be times when he feels no fear even in the heat of battle. Would his acts be those of courage then? It would really be no more than a secretary taking notes, just in a place other than an air-conditioned office. However, the only person who can recognize courage when he sees it, is himself. For only we know our own fears and only we would know when a task seem insurmountable to use and when we persevere nonetheless, then it would be courage.

Even then, courage would not be in its totality. Courage is also the strength to stand firm, unwavering in your views and values. Really, all there is to courage is that line “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the confrontation of it.” But fear is widely defined and thus courage too. This type of courage is far deeper than the previously mentioned. For this second courage is a battle of the human psyche and human emotion, especially in these times when people are so concerned with issues like self-esteem, and when teenagers living now have resorted to all forms of activities to fulfill this need. Most commonly, these include the need to feel loved, and thus, the want to follow, to imitate, to be accepted, just to be loved. This is where this second type of courage comes in. The strength to stand firm in one’s views. For this type of courage is really the willingness to remove whatever false pretences in front of others we have, whatever bondage we have to false friends in order to gain their acceptance. Before any adult should exclaim “Aha! Only teenagers ‘go with the flow’ and do these silly things”, I pose a question. In this time of teenage “innocence” when we are already so masked, what more an adult, who as to keep up appearance in the office, with your superior whom you detest but greet so pleasantly… this courage is a stand against hypocrisy. Many people in history chose to be different and take their stand for what they believed in. Joan of Arc, who was eventually burned at the stake, Galileo, who was placed under house arrest for saying the earth revolved around the sun – people who possessed courage to be different, but were persecuted by the world, and are celebrated today.

Lastly, there is a third kind of courage. This courage is one that few possess in the world today and if endowed upon all of us, I believe the world would be a perfect place. This courage is of one even greater and requiring more heart than any other. The courage of acceptance. There is a verse in the Bible, which goes “Accept one another, just as Christ accepted you.” This is the courage greatest of all. Many people, when dealt a bad hand in life, slink back and moan “Why me?” When meeting a bump in the long road of life, stop, cry out and curse the bump. This courage involves going against yourself, and requires the biggest heart to shun your negative emotions and to accept your fate and not take up arms against it. This courage of acceptance also involves the acceptance of that bump, the enemies we make, people who have done evil against you. To forgive them, would not the courage needed by one be of unfathomable depth? People who possess this courage are those with determination and the drive that them great men. Demosthenes, the stammering child who became a speaker, Gandhi, whose exploits are self-explanatory and I would dare say Hitler, a child with a very unpleasant life, filled with hate and rejection from his father, the art academy and even the army who grew a leader, albeit a twisted one.

Thus courage is really a battle against oneself. The ability to conquer one’s fears, to emerge from a safe haven of a mask into the light and to fight the unseen hand of fate. That would be my view, a glimpse, no matter how small, of what courage is.
